Typical problems when installing appliances

There is a lot that can go wrong while installing appliances: short circuits, leaks, malfunction, among others. If you do not do the installation correctly you can break the machine and put at risk your security and the entire house. Remember that you are dealing with electricity so the risk of electrocution and fire is real.

Some appliances cause more problems than others, so we are listing the ones which cause more issues. Sometimes it is better to call a professional, but if you want to install it yourself there are some simple tips you can follow to install any appliances.

Problems when installing appliances: Dishwasher

Most of the fabricants included a very detailed instructions manual that included information about the most common problems and malfunction any dishwasher can have, so it is a good idea to have it at hand during the installation. This applies to any appliance.

Before beginning, remember to cut the power and shut off the water flow, to avoid short circuits. Remember to properly adjust the connection between the dishwasher and the water pipes to avoid leaks.

If your kitchen floor is being tiled try to raise the dishwasher above or at the same height as the tiles. Because if you don’t it will be very difficult to remove it for services.

Washing machine

It is very similar to the dishwasher because you have to connect it to water pipes. Most washing machines included some screws in their drum. These prevent it from moving and being damaged during transportation. Always remove them following the instruction manual.

Also, make sure the water shut-off can be reached easily and install a water drain close to the machine. Always try to install water hoses long enough to remove the washing machine when necessary. If your house has a wooden floor maybe it will need extra joist bracing. A plywood section under the appliance can strengthen your wooden floor and avoid any malfunction.

Problems when installing appliances: Refrigerator

It is the biggest appliance in the house so it is very difficult to handle. Unpack it close to the place where you are going to place it.  Always try to install it away from any heat source so as not to alter its internal temperature. The only refrigerator that you can built-in are the ones with regular static condensers. Other kinds can suffer damage in their condenser.

Read the instructions to know the waiting time required for the refrigerator to be plugged into the power supply. This is because transport is usually horizontal and the internal liquids have to be returned to their initial position so that the refrigerator does not malfunction.

Problems when installing appliances: Dryer

Even when it is not an essential appliance, it is in many homes. Try to install it close or next to the washing machine, in a place where temperature changes do not occur, as this may alter its operation. Always install them in a place where the rear ventilation of the dryer is optimal.  If something obstructs the air outlet and inlet of the dryer, it can cause malfunctions.
